The European Laboratory for Particle Physics, located near Geneva,
Switzerland is the birthplace of the world wide web. Originally designed
for technitians at CERN to act as a bulletin board to exchange data with,
to say that it grew would be a grave understatement. In depth information
about the web, its origins and its directions can be found at http://www.w3.org/.Various software programs such as Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer provide a simple interface to the networked computers that make up the world wide web, turning it into a valuable resource everyone can use. Retail companies in particular are finding the WWW an extremely versatile advertising medium. Commerce is booming on the web; you can now buy everything from books to houses without leaving your computer chair!
Aside from being a useful sales medium, the world wide web provides access to many services which provide information. Libraries, museums and other educational entities are online as are most companies that provide computer software or hardware.
